Junia-T is a household name in Toronto's music scene, one synonymous with respect and a true dedication to the craft. We had the opportunity to catch his incredible live performance at an edition of 93 Paper Street, a great homegrown party curated/hosted/promoted with love by Shaq Novak. Performing alongside NTS BBRC, Rob GF, McCallaman, and more, Junia-T shone bright and delivered positive vibes and intellectual prose to the crowd. He's been on our interview list ever since, and in March, we finally sat down with him for a chat.
Junia-T has vision. With an extensive CV, a humble attitude and strong work ethic, Junia-T is a progenitor in Toronto’s music scene. His perspective and belief in divine timing have led him to connect with artists locally and abroad to work on incredible sonic art and social initiatives. Growing up in Mississauga, where he learned the tricks of the trade – whether through swapping tapes, or at freestyle battles – he moved east to share his gifts with Toronto. In addition to production credits on tracks by Little Simz, Zaki Ibrahim, Rich Kidd and more, Junia-T shines as a solo artist with his innovative prose and stunning musicality. As he works on a new record following the release of his 2014 album, Eye See You, and recently headlined the Canada Loves Dilla Tour Toronto stop, it’s evident that Junia-T’s vision is clear for the success that’s in sight.
We caught up with him at Sandbox Studios to delve into the journey to date, and what's next.
