Lido Pimienta: Don't Mess With My Stage

Music is Lido Pimienta’s lifeline. Jaque in Shakespeare’s As You Like It wasn’t wrong when he proclaimed all the world’s a stage. In this case, it’s Lido’s stage, and she isn’t stepping off until her sonic story resonates. And what better time than now?

"I am so connected when I'm on stage. I feel like there are these invisible neon strings that are attached to my mouth and heart that are attached to every heart, every ear, and every eye when I'm on stage. It's a magical, spiritual, out-of-body experience."

Lido is the definition of fearless. A genuine artist and activist in her own right, a brazen feminist, gifted producer, and supermom, Lido is a vibrant support system. Whether to her family and friends, or to audiences worldwide, she weaves lyrics of strength into the complex fabric of life, and depicts truth through each brushstroke on the canvas.

"When you collaborate with people like you, then you empower one another. If I don't bring my crew, what kind of art am I making and what kind of message am I delivering? It wouldn't be genuine. The women in my life are lifesavers, so they roll with me. That's my crew. We roll together."

The hustle is real, but it’s not a new one for Lido, who started her career as a child prodigy in Colombia. Two decades later, numerous art exhibitions, screenplays, festivals, workshops, and empowered as ever, Lido hasn’t changed. And a Polaris Music Prize win for her sophomore album, La Papessa, won’t alter this, either. Lido never sits back, she’s always in the driver’s seat, even when national recognition is the passenger. She looks forward, takes no shit and keeps it real. The high priestess has claimed her prize but it’s been within her all along. In this episode of BanTOR VIEWS, Lido reflects on identity, personal growth, family ties, her next project and leading a bold, authentic life.
